Your beach day starts at the gate
Cross Gulf Boulevard and you are on a barrier-island strand: pale sand, tea-green water, and a horizon with no cliffs. This is the Gulf of Mexico, not the Atlantic — the waves are usually small enough for floating, kids, and long shoreline walks.
You already have parking at the Yacht Club. Leave the car. Public access is a few minutes on foot. Seasonal chair and cabana vendors set up on the busier stretches; restrooms sit at the main accesses.

The strand
Flat island, white sand, no rocks
Madeira is a developed barrier island. Condos sit behind the dunes. The sand is soft and pale. You will not find Mediterranean cliffs or dark volcanic beaches here.
How to use it
Morning swim, midday shade, evening gold
Midday
This is when the heated club pools earn their keep. The sand is hot; the Yacht Club loungers are not. Come back out around 4.
Sunset
The classic Gulf orange. Stand at the waterline or walk south. After dark, the bay docks are the better stroll — the beach gets dark and the sand cools fast.
South along the sand
A shoreline walk toward John’s Pass
If you want a destination without driving, walk the beach south. The island narrows toward the Pass. You’ll pass public accesses, the occasional volleyball net, and fishermen on the jetty when the tide is right.
It is a long walk in August. Take water. Driving to the Village with a shower stop at the condo is the more comfortable version of the same afternoon.

What to pack
Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, water shoes if you want the Pass jetty, and a light cover-up for the walk back across Gulf Blvd. Confirm beach towels in your check-in note — we keep a set in 320H.
Parking
You already have a space at the Yacht Club. Beach lots fill on holiday weekends and you do not need them. Don’t leave valuables visible if you do drive to another access.
Stingrays & shells
Shuffle your feet in the shallows. After a blow, the tide line can be shelly — water shoes help. Live shells stay on the beach; Florida is serious about that.
Red tide
Uncommon, but it happens. It smells like a heavy tide and can irritate lungs. We watch Pinellas reports and will tell you if a requested week looks off.
Water & weather
What changes with the month
Winter Gulf water is swimmable for the committed and perfect for walking. Spring and fall are the sweet spot — warm water, fewer storms. Summer is bathtub-warm with brief, dramatic afternoon thunder. Hurricane season is official June–November; we track anything named.
If you want a different beach
Stay here first
Treasure Island (10 min) is a bit wider and livelier. St. Pete Beach / Pass-a-Grille (15–20) has more hotels and a different sunset angle. Clearwater (25) is the scene — Pier 60, more people, more parking theater. Madeira is the one you can use in flip-flops from the condo.
Leave the car for this one. The whole point of 320H is that the Gulf is a walk, not a logistics problem. Save the drive for John’s Pass dinner or a St. Pete museum day.
